Health Officials Advise Caution With Mosquitoes

July 23, 2010 Bunnell Fl. -- Flagler County Health Department officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquitoes.

“Due to increased mosquito- borne disease activity we are advising residents to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes,” Flagler County Health Department Administrator Patrick Johnson said. “At this time there are no alerts or warnings, but it just makes good sense to avoid being bitten if possible.”

The department recommends the five “D’s” to avoid being bitten. They are: Dusk and Dawn, avoid being out when mosquitoes are most active; Dress, wear clothing that covers most of your skin; DEET, if you have to go out use a repellent that contains 30 percent DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-touamide). Other effective mosquito repellents include picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535; Drainage, rid the area around your home of any standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

Horse owners should consult their veterinarian about getting their horses vaccinated for Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus.

The State Department of Health conducts a statewide surveillance for mosquito borne illnesses, including West Nile Virus infections, Easter equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, malaria and dengue. Residents are encouraged to report dead birds, call the Flagler County Health Department at 386-437-7358.
