Historically, there are different levels of 9-1-1 Service:

Basic 9-1-1:
This service provides a connection to a predetermined emergency response agency. You know that by dialing 9-1-1 you will be able to talk to the right people for help, but no information about your location or phone number is transmitted to the call taker.

Enhanced 9-1-1:
This service provides, in addition to the Basic 9-1-1 service, the caller's location and phone number to the 9-1-1 call taker. While this may not seem much by today's standards, it allows for faster response and provides call back information in case a call is interrupted. In addition, this service also allows for selective routing and selective transfer of 9-1-1 calls to other emergency response jurisdictions.

Wireless 9-1-1:
This service provides various levels of location information for cellular or wireless phone calls.

VoIP 9-1-1:
Please see the section on "VoIP and 9-1-1" for more information.
